
I. Background to the Competition
In today’s information-driven society, development has shifted from the ‘Internet’ to the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT). The IoT connects people, processes, data and physical objects, delivering richer product experiences and unprecedented development opportunities. Organised by the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission and hosted by New Micro Innovation Source, this V2X Smart Applications Dark Horse Competition adheres to the philosophy of ‘Hard Tech · Creating the Future’. Leveraging the innovation platform of the Shanghai Institute of Microsystems and Information Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and in conjunction with national-level specialised co-working spaces, the competition aims to accelerate the development of IoT technology within the automotive industry, identify valuable projects, and facilitate technology transfer and the commercialisation of research outcomes.
Whether you are a tech enthusiast, developer, design expert, student or a passionate start-up team, we welcome you to form a team and take part in this grand gathering for the development of hard technology in connected vehicles. Even if you currently have only a preliminary idea and no fully formed product, you can still experience this unrivalled geek carnival. We look forward to seeing makers push their limits during the 48-hour ‘hackathon’, utilising the hardware provided by the competition—such as ARM development boards and sensors—to connect to the cloud and design innovative, cutting-edge smart connected vehicle applications, thereby earning acclaim from industry experts and attracting the interest of investors.
II. Competition Information

III. Registration Information
Competition Procedure:

Registration format: Teams must register as a group, with each group comprising 3–5 members;
Following pre-competition training, 20 teams will be selected to proceed to the main competition.

Eligibility: Current students, start-up teams in the field of connected vehicles, and other organisations or individuals with an interest in connected vehicles
Design theme: Demonstration of smart applications related to connected vehicles in hardware form

IV. Competition Format and Judging Criteria
Organised by New Micro Innovation Source—a specialised incubator focusing on the Internet of Things (IoT) and advanced sensor industries—this Black Horse Competition will provide participants with a platform to develop software and hardware within a short timeframe. Over the course of the two-day competition, participants will utilise an IoT microcontroller development platform, integrate various advanced sensors, and connect to cloud networks to develop innovative and pioneering smart applications related to the Internet of Vehicles (IoV).
The judging panel will conduct an open and transparent assessment based on criteria such as ‘innovation’, ‘practicality’, ‘commercial value’, ‘teamwork’ and ‘level of completion’. Winning teams will receive cash prizes as well as resources including free incubation space, industrialisation services and commercial promotion. All registered participants are eligible to attend the competition’s project showcase.
V. Awards
First Prize: 1 team – 10,000 yuan team prize + 1 year’s free office space + a mystery diamond gift pack
Second Prize: 2 teams – 5,000 yuan team prize + half a year’s free office space + a mystery platinum gift pack
Third Prize: 4 teams – 2,500 yuan team prize + half a year’s free office space + a mystery gold gift pack
Merit Award: 13 teams – 1,000 yuan team prize
All participating teams will receive a certificate of honour for the 2018 Shanghai Hackathon and a commemorative T-shirt
VI. Important Notes
1. All registered teams will have the opportunity to receive free incubation services provided by New Micro-Innovation.
2. The contents of the mystery gift packs will be announced during the training period.
3. Participants must provide accurate personal details. The organising committee will verify the authenticity of this information; any falsification will result in disqualification.
4. Whilst we believe a well-developed concept from the outset will help teams create an excellent product within the competition timeframe, we strictly prohibit the submission of finished or semi-finished products.
5. If you are keen to take part but lack suitable teammates, you may explain your situation and provide relevant details when registering, specifying your role. You will then be able to form a team on-site with like-minded participants to compete.

1. Realtek development board: Ameba RTL8195 Arduino Wireless Board
2. Sensors:
(1) (Silu) Optical Proximity Sensor AP3426: Measures light intensity and distance within an 8 cm range.
(2) (Silu) FIS2108: Contains an accelerometer and a gyroscope, capable of measuring acceleration and angle.
(3) (Yeying) STP9CF59-D Digital Thermopile Infrared Sensor: This digital thermopile infrared sensor integrates an AD converter, enabling the sensor voltage and ambient temperature to be output directly as digital signals.
(4) (Silicon杰) Millimetre-wave radar sensor RKB1118I: A compact 24 GHz millimetre-wave radar sensor module designed for IoT sensor applications and other fields, used to detect objects, people or vehicles, and capable of determining the presence and distance of targets. It offers advantages such as high detection accuracy, all-weather operation and range measurement capabilities.
