Driving the Future —The Automotive Executive Development Programme (Auto EDP), jointly launched by the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and the Michigan College at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, offers a two-week immersive programme in North America. It provides elite professionals from the automotive industry and related sectors with innovative ideas, insightful perspectives and practical guidance, equipping them with the ability to lead the transformation of the automotive industry in China, North America and globally, and to drive the sector towards playing a stronger role in the global economy.

At 16:30 on 28 September, the Auto EDP delegation visited Jiading. The delegation comprised: the Vice President of Jiangling Motors, the Vice President of Business Management for Asia-Pacific at Tenneco, the Regional General Manager of Tenneco, the Deputy Dean and professors from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University–University of Michigan Joint College, amongst others. The delegation of nine visited Jiading, where they toured the 8-inch MEMS pilot production line at the Industrial Research Institute and Shanghai SGR Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as SGR), to further explore the future development of the automotive sector.


The first stop was the Industrial Research Institute’s ‘Beyond Moore’ 8-inch MEMS pilot production line. This facility specialises in ‘Beyond Moore’ products and technologies and features a high-grade micro- and nano-fabrication cleanroom spanning nearly 5,000 square metres, enabling comprehensive research, development and mass production of surface, bulk and 3D micro- and nano-fabrication technologies, as well as new processes, devices and systems.

The second stop of the tour was at SGR, where the delegation was received by Dr Zhu, Vice President of Research and Development at SGR.


SGR is a company specialising in the development of millimetre-wave radar chips. Based in Jiading, the ‘Automotive City’, it has developed the first highly integrated 24 GHz radar SoC with independent domestic intellectual property rights, whilst also developing a series of highly integrated 24 GHz and 77 GHz products.


The guests watched the product demonstrations in SGR’ laboratory with great interest and asked numerous questions. In response to these queries, Dr Zhu invited them to the company’s conference room for a more detailed presentation.
